This session lays the groundwork for discernment. What is it? What is its source? Why do we need it? It is “he that is spiritual [who] judgeth all things,” because “the eyes of your understanding [are] being enlightened.” Discernment is a mark of maturity — not a mystical talent, but a trained ability that develops “by reason of use.” We’ll consider the difference between natural perception and spiritual understanding, and why discerning properly is critical for living faithfully in confusing and compromising times.

This session defines sound doctrine and highlights the need to guard against false teaching. How do we discern doctrine that is sound from that which is unsound? What is sound doctrine? What is the importance of possessing it when it comes to discernment. What are some essential doctrinal matters that need to be discerned for growth of the believer. Doctrines like the distinction between law and grace, walking in the Spirit versus the flesh, and recognizing other dispensational distinctives. Also, one could examine the proper discernment of what isn’t a distinctive and that which is interdispensational. Participants will be encouraged to grow in discernment “by reason of use” — through personal study, spiritual maturity, and doctrinal clarity.
Bro. Adam McGath | Sep. 27, 2025 | 2 Corinthians 13:5; Heb. 4:12; Ps. 139:23 | Download Audio
Spiritual discernment must begin inward. This session encourages self-examination through the Word and prayer, allowing God's truth to judge the heart’s thoughts and intents. As the Scriptures say, “the heart is deceitful above all things,” and “the word of God is… a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Through the lens of Scripture, believers are taught to judge their own faith, motives, and spiritual maturity. This session will emphasize the use of prayerful meditation, personal accountability, and scriptural self-examination as necessary tools to discern between walking in the Spirit or drifting into fleshly patterns.

God's will is not found through impressions (or as I call it – a goosebump theology), but through understanding the will of the Lord that is given and led by the Spirit and the Word. This session unpacks how to walk wisely and approve what is excellent. Discernment here is framed as daily obedience: learning to choose what is good, acceptable, and perfect by renewing the mind through God’s Word. As believers, we’re called to “prove all things” and “approve the things that are excellent.” Practical application will help believers walk wisely in their unique callings and day-to-day decisions, and by reason of use what aligns with the mind of Christ.

In this session, we’ll explore how the Bible categorizes people spiritually — and how understanding these distinctions affect the way we minister and relate to others. Whether interacting with the lost, guiding the carnal, or encouraging the mature, spiritual discernment enables us to apply truth rightly in context. Some are natural and do not receive the things of the Spirit; others are babes in Christ; some are spiritual. The discussion will challenge us to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach and instead learn to discern who we're dealing with and how God’s Word speaks to each condition.

Discernment must be exercised with humility and love. This session encourages speaking truth graciously, without losing conviction or creating avoidable division. It addresses the tone and spirit of discernment. We are called to hold firm to truth without arrogance, to confront error without harshness, and to remain unified without compromising essential doctrine. Rooted in Ephesians 4, this session calls for a mature, Christlike spirit — one that discerns rightly and speaks graciously. Discernment must walk hand in hand with love, humility, and patience.

The final session exposes the danger of spiritual blindness within the Church — failing to discern the Lord’s body leads to division, confusion, and even judgment. Paul’s warning in 1 Corinthians reveals how failing to discern the Lord’s body leads to disorder and neglect of one another. This session calls for spiritual sobriety — to see the Church as Christ does, to walk in unity where truth allows, and to practice the “one another” commands of the New Testament with faithfulness and grace.
