Many people believe they are going to heaven because (they would say) "I am a good person." If comparing with others on a relative standard, this might make some sense to human reasoning. However, human beings have a tendency to overestimate their own righteousness and to underestimate God's justice. When we are dealing with matters of eternity, we are not dealing with our peers, but we are dealing with God. Therefore, any standard of relative righteousness based upon comparing ourselves among ourselves is unwise. God's standard is infinitely higher and requires perfect righteousness to be declared just in His sight. None of us meet this standard, for all have sinned. This is why God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to provide perfect righteousness for us. He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day with power to offer righteousness and the gift of eternal life based upon what He did. This gift is received by faith in what His grace has provided on the cross. God justifies us in His sight the moment we believe this gospel and trust the Lord Jesus Christ as our all-sufficient Savior.
