Spiritual Deadness & the Power of the Resurrection

Eph. 2:1, 5 – And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins...Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

The amounts and kinds of sin you have committed in your life have no relationship to the how spiritually dead you are as a natural man. You are spiritually dead by virtue of being a son of Adam whether your sins be great or small by quantity and kind. We are not spiritually dead sinners because we sin, rather we sin because we are spiritually dead sinners. This means that a moral person and an immoral person differ in nothing as it relates to the degree of spiritual deadness they posses. One may have greater visible manifestations of such than the other, and one may have more trouble in the flesh as a consequence of sins participated in, but both are equally dead spiritually. There is no such thing as being "deader" than someone else. You are either all the way dead, or you are all the way alive. There is no middle between these.

This means that the same power that raised up Christ from the dead after having died for our sins is required in order for any man to be made spiritually alive. Whether a sheltered child or a hardened criminal, both require the same extraordinary power of God to raise them up out of their spiritual deadness and create new life. This is why it is a moot point for anyone to delay trusting Christ out of fear that their sins are too great, and likewise, for anyone to doubt their need of trusting Christ because their sins are too small. These are not the issues to be concerned with. The problem is spiritual deadness which is common to us all, and only the resurrection power of Christ Jesus can remedy such a plight.

The gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth. He died for our sins, having been made sin for us, and thus tasted death for every man. He was buried, putting away our death out of God's sight. At last, He was raised again the third day, having seen no corruption, and with endless resurrection life secured redemption power to bestow the "spirit of holiness" and quicken those who were the subjects of spiritual death. O that we might know Him, and the power of his resurrection!
